From education to employment

Jennifer Coupland, DfE/BIS Apprenticeships reform update

FE News talks to Jennifer Coupland, deputy director of the joint DfE/BIS Apprenticeships Unit, at the Apprenticeship’s 4 England’s Voice of Apprenticeships conference in London.

Coupland updates us on the current reform programme, which aims to give control of apprenticeship design, assessment and funding to employers to increase the number of apprentices, and improve quality to the levels seen in Germany and Australia.

The idea has been popular with employers but there have been challenges in getting a set of funding reforms that are universally welcomed. Coupland expects to announce a new employer-rooted funding system shortly that will resolve these remaining issues.

She also sets out the key ingredients for creating a successful apprenticeship programme.
