Gatwick Airport engineering head on problems facing STEM
FE News talks to Dawn Elson, head of engineering at Gatwick Airpot, at the Association of Colleges Conference.
She tackles the problems facing engineering as a subject, pointing to how students seem to not understand what engineering actually is and what sort of jobs they are able to do with it. According to Mrs Elson, the sector needs to get more role models into colleges alongside the right careers advice.
Only 14% of girls take sciences at A Levels, and that then reduces to 7% in terms of engineering careers.
