The new Teacher Degree Apprenticeship, set to launch this autumn, promises to revolutionize teacher recruitment and offer an innovative path to a degree. This four-year program, available for aspiring primary and secondary teachers, provides a work-based route to a degree and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). In a bid to support schools, the government is initiating a pilot scheme, funding up to 150 apprentices to teach maths in secondary schools, transforming the teaching profession and offering an alternative, high-quality route into education.
The Teacher Degree Apprenticeship aims to diversify teaching routes, supporting teaching assistants without existing degrees to progress in their careers. Trainees will spend 40% of their time studying for a degree, obtaining QTS with tuition fees covered. This apprenticeship is a game-changing opportunity for career changers and those seeking an earn-and-learn route without student debt. As part of the government’s commitment to education, this £196 million investment will attract and retain top teaching talent, ensuring a high-skill, high-productivity economy.
The TDA program opens up teaching to a wider pool of candidates. Unlike traditional training routes, you don’t need an existing degree to apply. The program is open to career changers, teaching assistants without degrees, and school leavers. Specific eligibility criteria will be announced soon. The TDA aims to attract talented individuals from all backgrounds into the teaching profession.
The Teacher Degree Apprenticeship (TDA) program offers the flexibility for individuals to train as both primary and secondary teachers. This means that aspiring teachers can choose to specialise in teaching at the primary level, covering a range of subjects, or opt for secondary education, where they can focus on specific subjects at a more advanced level. The TDA program caters to a diverse range of teaching preferences, allowing trainees to pursue their passion for particular subjects or age groups.
The TDA provides a salary and on-the-job training for a degree and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – the only program to do so. Other training routes require you to fund a degree initially or study full-time without an income. Once qualified, TDA teachers hold the same credentials as teachers who qualified through other routes.
The TDA is a game-changing opportunity, offering an accessible and affordable route into teaching. With government backing, this program aims to diversify recruitment and retain top talent – transforming the teaching profession for the future.
