Supported Internships are structured study programs blending workplace training with classroom learning for young people aged 16-24 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). They aim to support the transition from education into paid employment.
Interns spend the majority of their time at the workplace, typically around 70%, supported by a job coach. The remainder is spent off the job, usually at a school, college or learning provider. Here they work towards math, English and other qualifications as well as employability skills.
The primary goal is for the young person to achieve paid employment either during or upon completion of the 6-12 month internship. Providers partner with employers to offer tailored work placements matched to the intern’s strengths, needs and career aspirations.
Supported Internships aim to facilitate the transition from education into meaningful careers for young people with SEND. Check the tag page for updates on best practices, program case studies, employer perspectives and more.
