A special educational need (SEN) refers to a learning difficulty or disability that requires special educational provisions to be made. SEN can encompass specific learning difficulties like dyslexia, developmental disorders like autism, sensory or physical disabilities, ADHD, mental health conditions, and more.
FE colleges have a legal obligation to make reasonable adjustments and provide auxiliary aids to ensure students with SEN can access education. This includes:
Students first declare any SEN during the application and enrollment process. The college then conducts a needs assessment, reviews any existing Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), and works with the student and their support team to determine reasonable adjustments required.
Yes, many FE colleges offer specialist programs designed for students with SEN, taught by qualified SEN instructors. Courses include:
Colleges receive annual allocation from government funding bodies to support high needs students up to age 25. They can also apply for special top-up funding from local authorities for individual students with more complex or costly SEN requiring enhanced provisions.
Challenges can include accessibility issues with course materials/facilities, lack of staff training on specific needs, struggles with independent living/transportation, and difficulties managing increased workloads and independent learning compared to school environments. Social inclusion and feeling different from peers is also a common issue.
Key areas for improvement include staff training on conditions like autism, transitional support when entering FE, incorporating universal design principles for accessibility and differentiated instruction. Peer mentoring programs, counseling, and collaborating with SEN organisations are other recommended practices.
