24 August 2023– GCSE and level 2 VTQs.
Ofqual outlined a two-year grading plan for GCSE and A level courses starting in September 2021.
In the following September, Ofqual affirmed the restoration of pre-pandemic grading standards by 2023.
For the current year’s grading, accommodations will be made to account for any disruptions. This aims to maintain overall results similar to those of 2019. Consequently, if national performance is lower than pre-pandemic levels, senior examiners will adjust grade boundaries accordingly.
Essentially, this implies that students have an equal probability of achieving a specific grade this year as they would have had before the pandemic.
Awarding organizations will adopt appropriate grading arrangements for the qualifications they offer in VTQs, considering the diverse assessment methods employed. In doing so, they will consider the grading methods employed in GCSEs, AS levels, and A levels, where applicable.
Ofqual has requested awarding organizations to demonstrate leniency in the initial years of awarding the Technical Qualification component in T Levels. This directive acknowledges the novelty of these qualifications.
In the current year, Technical Qualifications within T Levels will exclusively rely on examination-based assessments, unlike in 2021 when teacher assessed grades were also considered. Consequently, the outcome distribution in certain subjects may exhibit variations, emphasizing the importance of avoiding direct comparisons with the results from the previous year.
For more on grading and how it works see Ofqual’s website.
Each year, universities ensure that their entry requirements and offers align with the expected grades students will attain during the summer. This is something they do every year and 2023 is no different.
Although grades hold significant weight in university applications, admissions teams take into account a wide range of information about a student. This includes predicted grades, personal statements, teacher references, other assessments, and interviews, forming a comprehensive evaluation of each applicant.
