QTS is a certification that shows teachers in England meet the national Teaching Standards. It is required for teachers in state-funded schools and shows they have the training and skills needed to teach effectively.
Qualified Teacher Status proves a teacher is qualified and competent. State-funded academies and schools actively prefer hiring teachers who have QTS over those who don’t. It is an essential benchmark credential for teachers.
There are several main pathways: PGCE university programs, school-centred PGCEs, School Direct training, Teach First leadership programs, or assessment-only for experienced teachers. Each allows you to demonstrate meeting the Teachers’ Standards through classroom teaching.
Teachers from Wales can convert their qualifications through the standard QTS assessment process. Qualifications from Wales automatically transfer. Scottish and Northern Irish teachers need to formally apply to acquire eligibility to teach in England.
Overseas teachers can have their qualifications evaluated for equivalency to England’s QTS standards. Any gaps can be filled with additional training and examinations to ensure full recognition of QTS.
While Qualified Teacher Status is mandatory for state-funded schools, many private schools also utilise it when evaluating applicant qualifications and competence. Having these recognised credentials opens up more potential job opportunities.
