Numeracy skills refer to a set of abilities that involve understanding, interpreting, and using numerical information effectively. These skills encompass the capability to work with numbers, perform calculations, interpret data, and make informed decisions in various real-world contexts.
Numeracy goes beyond basic arithmetic and includes skills such as financial literacy, statistical reasoning, and problem-solving with quantitative information. In the context of education, developing numeracy skills is essential for individuals to navigate daily tasks, excel in academic pursuits, and contribute meaningfully to a numerically driven society.
The UK government, under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s leadership, has introduced several key initiatives to enhance the study of maths. The “maths to 18” plan aims to make maths education more accessible and less intimidating for children. Initiatives include the establishment of an advisory group comprised of mathematicians, education leaders, and business representatives.
Additionally, the expansion of ‘Maths Hubs’ across England and the introduction of a new professional qualification for those teaching maths in primary schools are part of the government’s strategy. The ‘Advanced British Standard,’ announced in October 2023, replaces post-16 qualifications, incorporating maths for all students.
Maths Hubs, launched in July 2014, play a crucial role in improving maths education in schools and colleges across England. The network of 40 Maths Hubs supports institutions in adopting a ‘teaching for mastery’ approach. This approach emphasises continuous development of teachers’ specialist knowledge, designing a curriculum with coherent content, and ensuring sustained progression over time.
The Hubs are committed to extending the Maths Hubs Teaching for Mastery program to 75% of primary schools and 65% of secondary schools by 2025. The goal is to enhance the overall quality of maths education through collaborative efforts.
