February 2017, Lord Baker (alongside Lord Adonis, Lord Storey and Baroness Morris of Yardley) tabled an amendment to the Technical and Further Education Bill, which means that schools have a legal requirement to:
“ensure that there is an opportunity for a range of education and training providers to access registered pupils during the relevant phase of their education for the purpose of informing them about approved technical education qualifications or apprenticeships”.
Having come into effect on 2 January 2018, the new law, commonly known as the Baker clause, stipulates that schools must ensure that a “range of education and training providers” have access to pupils from year 8 to year 13, so that they can be informed about what technical education and apprenticeship opportunities are available to them.”
