Young athletes in education to benefit from dual career scheme at Brockenhurst College

Richard Carrel - Sport Lecturer and Academy Rugby Coach

Brockenhurst College is leading the way with supporting talented athletes in education in England, having been accredited by a TASS (Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme) initiative.

The Sport England-backed programme helps young people get the very best from their sporting and academic careers without having to choose between the two.

For many athletes, skills and formal qualifications are needed to help them find alternative careers, either alongside their sporting activities or after retiring from professional sport.

As a Dual Career Accredited Site, Brockenhurst College is now part of a network of institutions that already partner with TASS, delivering core support services to more than 600 student athletes each year.

Support services include physiotherapy, nutrition, lifestyle support, psychology strength and conditioning and a private medical scheme.

In the 2017 Duty of Care in Sport Review, Baroness Grey-Thompson said: “For me the TASS Dual Career Accreditation Scheme is a vitally important measure to ensuring all athletes have the chance to pursue an education and enjoy a more well-rounded approach to life.”

Sport Lecturer and Academy Rugby Coach at Brockenhurst College, Richard Carrel said: “At Brockenhurst College we recognise the modern day challenges that student athletes face, in and out of education.

“Being a TASS dual career accredited centre will allow us to further support and develop those students in both their academic studies and chosen sporting field” he added.
