From education to employment

Wigan & Leigh College hosts Google Digital Garage

Wigan & Leigh College was a hive of activity as more than 100 community groups and businesses attended a Google ‘Digital Garage’ social media master class arranged by Lloyds Bank.

The initiative is part of a nationwide drive by Lloyds to engage with communities with the aim of offering businesses, charities and community groups a master class in how to utilise social media.

Lorraine Groch, Vice Principal for Business Services at Wigan & Leigh College said, “It has been a pleasure to welcome one of the biggest companies in the world into our College and everyone found it to be a fantastic experience.

“Our Computing and IT students also benefited greatly from Wigan & Leigh College’s involvement in this event, especially working with the Google trainer who provided them with such valuable employability advice.”

Sam Palmer, Programme Manager who attended from ABL Health said, “Digital media is always changing and evolving and there is no one better to learn from than Google. We got a lot of tips about using video to raise our company profile on social media so we found it really useful.”

Sonya Bithell, Business Connector for Wigan, brought the event to Wigan on behalf of Business in the Community. She said, “We wanted the event to be in Wigan as we have thriving business and community sectors that would benefit from a Google Digital Workshop. To get more than 100 people to attend is a testament to the organisations who are looking to expand by building on their digital skills.”
