Unique Theatre Performance Brings 19th Century Literature to Life

Last month, GCSE English students had the opportunity to see their studies come to life as they enjoyed a theatre production of ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’.

Ginificent, a travelling theatre company, came to the college on Wednesday 26th April to deliver an exciting and dynamic production of the 19th Century Gothic classic.

The hour long performance, which featured a hand-made set and props, provided students with an alternative revision style, ahead of the up and coming GCSE exams in June.

After the production, students had the chance to ask the actors about the performance to get an insight into Victorian literature, helping them with their studies.

Louise Johnston, Curriculum Area Manager for GCSE said: “It was a fabulous afternoon and Ginificent were magnificent. The students were gripped from the beginning and the performance laid out the story of misadventure and murder true to the original text.”

The interactive elements enabled the students to become part of the production giving them more than just a show; it gave valuable context and understanding to the text through a method like no other. It really was Gothic literature at its best.”
