TV Doctor and Comedy Writer to Appear at Our Health Heroes

TV’s Dr Dawn Harper and former doctor and best-selling author Adam Kay are set to appear at the fourth annual Our Health Heroes Awards, where healthcare staff from across the UK are celebrated for their dedication and commitment to patient care.

Dr Dawn Harper, best known for her appearances on Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies and Born Naughty? will host the national Our Health Heroes awards, while best-selling author of This is Going to Hurt, Adam Kay, is due to give a special performance during the ceremony at London’s Science Museum on Wednesday 20th November.

Organisers have already received hundreds of nominations but are calling for any final submissions ahead of the deadline on Saturday 29th June 2019 via the dedicated Our Health Heroes webpage.

Delivered by Skills for Health, with support from headline sponsor Health Education England, the 2019 Our Health Heroes awards will celebrate the thousands of healthcare support workers who are the backbone of the NHS and wider health and care sector.

Dr Dawn Harper is a leading media medic and NHS doctor in Gloucestershire, best known for her work on Channel 4’s award winning ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ & ‘Born Naughty?’

Dr Dawn Harper said: commented about the awards:“I’m delighted to have been asked to host this very special event, recognising the amazing work our dedicated healthcare support staff carry out day-after-day, across the UK.

“These people are the true heroes of our healthcare service and they deserve to be rewarded for their efforts with such a fantastic occasion.”

Also attending the awards will be Adam Kay, a comedian, former doctor and author of the million-copy bestseller and 2018 Guardian Book of the Year This is Going to Hurt, his diaries from his time working in the NHS.

Adam said: “I’m so proud to be able to celebrate the heroes working in the NHS, and recognise their hard work and phenomenal dedication.

“The Our Health Heroes awards highlight the thousands of teams and individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our NHS, health and care systems running smoothly. Those who go above and beyond their usual remit to deliver high-quality care to their patients and support to one another.

“Without these people, the NHS couldn’t survive. These are the unsung heroes of the UK’s healthcare sector and we want to say thank you to them.”

Nominations in eight categories can be made by anyone, including members of the public. Healthcare staff can also nominate each other for outstanding contributions made to healthcare, for the benefit of patient care and services.

Entries will be shortlisted following the deadline and regional winners and finalists will be chosen either by public vote or an expert panel, before the winners are announced at the ceremony in November.

Thanks to the ongoing support of headline sponsor Health Education England, category sponsors NHS Employers and UNISON, the awards have grown again for the fourth year and will now include the Outstanding Contribution Award and Learning and Development Project of the Year Award.

The Staff Wellbeing Employer, Apprentice, Workforce Planning Team, Integrated Team, and Clinical Support and Operational Services Support Workers of the Year categories will all return as usual.
