Tory cuts contributing to rise in knife crime

Layla Moran, Vice Chair, f40 fair funding campaign

Responding to the report by Ofsted on Safeguarding children and young people in education from knife crime, which has found schools aren’t supported well enough when it comes to dealing with knife crime, Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Layla Moran said:

“School leaders are constantly having to do more with less. It is unsurprising that Ofsted have found the biggest barrier schools are facing when tackling knife crime is cost.

“The report is clear, tackling this issue is a problem for the whole of society, needing a public health approach. The major cuts to schools since 2015 have evidently made things much worse.

“This Conservative Government must ensure the funding is there to reduce the numbers of children being excluded, significantly increase investment in youth services and stop the reductions in the number of police community support officers. We must give schools the resources to tackle the crime epidemic we are currently witnessing.”
