Top education award for inspirational lecturer

A Cambridge Regional College lecturer has won a national education award for his inspirational work promoting student entrepreneurship.

Michael Warburton, who heads games development at CRC and launched the college’s student-run Rizing Games enterprise, won the top Enterprise Catalyst award in the prestigious National Enterprise Educators Awards. The judges said he was “an excellent ambassador for games development and for further education”.

The awards, which recognise excellence in enterprise and entrepreneurship education in higher and further education, celebrate exceptional and inspirational commitment to supporting student entrepreneurship.

Michael, winner of Bafta Young Game Designer Mentor of the Year 2016, has built up an international reputation for the college’s games development course – winning CRC the accolade of School of Dreams after students became the first to exhibit their games at the E3 expo in Los Angeles.

Paul Breheny, head of CRC’s STEAM faculty – which includes Science, Access, Engineering, Computing, Media, Art and Design, and Music – said Michael was an inspirational lecturer.

“This is a fantastic win and we are absolutely delighted and very proud that Michael’s entrepreneurial work with the students has been recognised at a national level,” he said.

“Our innovative Rizing Games enterprise has won an international reputation and enables the students to exhibit their own game creations at E3, the world-leading expo in Los Angeles – the only FE students to do so.

“The award is a great honour for the college – particularly as it comes so soon after Cambridge Regional College was named FE STEM College of the Year.”

The award was presented at the International Entrepreneurship Educators Conference Gala Dinner in Glasgow.
