Spurgeon’s College commits to the Economic Recovery Action Plan for South London
Spurgeon’s College (@SpurgeonCollege), based in South Norwood and one of the UK’s leading Christian Colleges, has committed to supporting the South London Partnership (SLP)’s Economic Recovery Action Plan, aimed at helping to restore and develop local South London communities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alongside ten other leading South London higher and further education institutions, the College will work with the five London Boroughs and with local businesses to support innovation, help create new jobs, and promote business development and growth.
Supporting the Economic Recovery Action Plan forms part of Spurgeon’s College’s commitment to supporting its local communities through collaboration with small businesses and other community partners. It builds on the College’s recent work, in partnership with the London Borough of Croydon and the Croydon Business community, to launch the new Croydon Division of the South East London Chamber of Commerce from its campus in Croydon.
Looking ahead, the College hopes to be able to further strengthen and build on its work and relationships with the local business community though its proposed development to improve the campus. This ambition forms part of the College’s wider plans to become the first home-grown university in Croydon, enabling it to offer higher education and developmental opportunities to more people within the Borough.
Principal of Spurgeon’s College, Rev Professor Philip McCormack said:
“We are delighted to be able to support the South London Economic Recovery Action Plan, as our communities work to rebuild from the devastating impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. Higher education plays a vital role in local economies – both through supporting local businesses and by providing highly skilled graduates for the local workforce. It is now more important than ever that our institutions work together – and in collaboration with the wider community and Boroughs – to meet the challenges created by the pandemic, and the Economic Recovery Action Plan is an essential step in this direction.
“As a deeply embedded member of the Croydon community, we are proud to be working closely with local businesses to support the economic recovery from COVID and we are committed to accelerating the social, cultural and economic development of our local area. The Economic Recovery Action Plan marks an important collective call to action which we at Spurgeon’s College are excited to be a part of.”
