Sport students tackle inequalities

Debra Cummins speaking to students over Teams.

Sport students at @BarnsleyCollege Higher Education got the chance listen to guest speaker, Debra Cummins, talk about the role of sport development to help tackle inequalities.

Debra, Development Manager for Children and Young People at Yorkshire Sport Foundation, discussed tackling inactivity and the barriers certain groups face because of their age, gender, ethnicity, disability and socioeconomic status.

The students took the opportunity to ask how they can use their sport qualifications to help address inequality, increase awareness of diversity, and encourage activity within the local community.

Yorkshire Sport Foundation is a Lottery-funded charity, supporting organisations across the nine districts of South and West Yorkshire. Their vision is to create a vibrant, healthy and prosperous Yorkshire through sport and supporting the work of local, regional and national organisations.

Scott Wood, a Coaching, Physical Education and Sports Development Foundation Degree student, said:

“I thought the talk was pretty good. It really resonated with my aims of improving communities and the wellbeing of people. It was really interesting how the chain of command in sports development makes its way from the top for example, from government to local initiatives.”

Dan Connolly, Sport Higher Education Pathway Leader at Barnsley College, added:

“Activities such as guest speakers are an important part of getting the word out about how sport can improve the lives of everyone. We were grateful and thrilled when Debra spoke to our degree students about the role of sport development to help tackling inequalities within the sport industry. I’d really like to thank Debra for sharing the Yorkshire Sport Foundation vision with our students.”

Barnsley College transforms the lives of students, staff and communities.
