Short story success for Kirklees College students

Kirklees College are celebrating its creative talent as it announced the winners of its fourth short story competition.

The competition which was launched on World Book Day, enabled students to put pen to paper and get their creative juices flowing as they submitted a 500-word short story entry, with the winners being published in-house for students and faculty to read.

The stories were judged individually by a panel of three judges and given a score out of 10. The combined scores were then used to identify the winners.

Judging was a difficult task, as competition this year was incredibly high and the judges had to whittle it down to three winners and two runners up from the 27 entries.

1st – Andrea Nicholson – “Getting Ready”

2nd – Shana Wilson – “The Call”

3rd – Laura Merriman – “The Path I Choose”

Runners-Up

Daisy Lindley – “Saved by His ears”

Rabbia Muhammad – “Forgotten Scream”

Entries were submitted from across the college’s campuses including their Huddersfield, Oldroyd, Springfield and Taylor Hill centres.

“The quality of the entries to this year’s competition was extremely high, which made the judges’ task of choosing the winners difficult, but at the same time clearly demonstrates the immense creativity of our students.”

“The judges were blown away by the winning entry, whose simple title “Getting Ready” belied the subtle use of emotion in the writing had a powerful impact on the reader,” said Sue Eaton, Librarian – Literacy, Quality, TLA, HE and Teacher Education.
