National sports charity StreetGames chosen by Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle
StreetGames has been personally selected by the royal couple to benefit from donations in lieu of wedding gifts
StreetGames is honoured to be one of the seven charities chosen to benefit from donations to mark the wedding of Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle. The couple have asked that anyone who wishes to send a wedding gift, instead considers donating to a shortlist of charities, personally chosen by the couple to support work in areas where the couple have a particular interest.
StreetGames uses sport to change lives across the UK, helping people and communities to become healthier, safer and more successful. The charity uses sport to empower young people to kick-start a cycle of positive change in their lives that resonates across communities. Many of the young people supported by the various projects go on to become volunteers and inspire the next generation.
StreetGames’ work is delivered through over 1,000 local organisations across the country. These local delivery partners are the lifeblood of their neighbourhoods in which they work and live, and understand best what works and what is needed in their respective communities.
StreetGames focuses on three core areas to improve the lives and opportunities of disadvantaged youths across the UK:
- Holiday hunger: Up to three million children and young people are at risk of holiday-time hunger in the UK – an urgent problem with a simple solution. StreetGames’ Fit and Fed campaign provides holiday activity sessions, along with a nutritious meal, in impoverished neighbourhoods of need, every day of the holidays, free of charge.
- Us Girls: Us Girls, this multiple award-winning programme supports teenage girls to challenge the everyday sexism that undermines their confidence in being active and taking on leadership roles. Us Girls, shows that ‘This Girl Can!’
- DoorStep Sport: DoorStep Sport is sport delivered at the right time, at the right price, in the right place, in the right way, and by the right people. When a neighbourhood has access to DoorStep Sport, everybody gets to participate – whatever their background and whether they see themselves as ‘sporty’ or not.
Jane Ashworth OBE, CEO of StreetGames, said of the announcement: “All of us at StreetGames are absolutely thrilled to have been personally chosen by Prince Harry and Ms. Markle. It’s a great honour to have our work using sport to change lives and communities recognised in this way”.
