Leeds College of Building Shows ‘Pride in Construction’

Leeds College of Building is, for the first time ever, taking part in Leeds Pride on Sunday (5^th August 2018). Leeds Pride is Yorkshire’s biggest celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans life.

The College is showing support for the LGBT+ community as the only education provider and college to take a stall in the Leeds Pride Market Place over Leeds Bridge. The College will promote equality and diversity in the construction industry and provide glitter tattoos, face painting, and Pride Snapchat filters for revellers who visit the stand.

 Leeds College of Building staff and students will also take part in the Leeds Pride parade, which sets off from Millennium Square at 2.00pm and finishes at Lower Briggate. College participants will be carrying a banner with the slogan ‘Pride in Construction.’ This year, over 120 floats are taking part in the parade through the city, the largest number ever shown.

Speaking about the significant contributions to construction and the built environment that LGBT staff and students are making, the College’s Equality and Inclusion Manager, said:

“Some people still continue to hold stereotypical images that a construction worker is male and heterosexual; well, we will show that there is fantastic diversity in the modern construction workforce of 2018! 

“Our LGBT staff and students will march in the parade and show that the construction industry and Leeds College of Building welcomes and values LGBT staff and students. We will continue to challenge old-fashioned stereotypes, and we will continue to show that a diverse workforce works better for the UK construction industry.”
