Innovative Alliance secure contract with HMP Risley to deliver Barbering programme

National Adult Education Training Provider, @IATraining_Liv (IA) have secured a 12-month contract with HMP Risley to deliver a Barbering Academy within the prison. The programme will see the training provider work with up to 80 learners providing a range of knowledge-based and skills-based learning opportunities.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the barbering programme will initially utilise a range of self-study resources to support student development; one-to-one support will be provided by IA’s Senior Barbering Trainer, Julie, who has 25 years of experience in the industry, previously provided Barbering training in HMP Risley and is delighted to be back. When asked about her return, she said;

‘’I am thrilled to be returning to Risley and can’t wait to welcome back past and new learners to the Barbering Academy.’’

All participants will complete the Introduction to Barbering self-study course which will run across 25 hours; it includes modules in barbering services, preparing for work in a salon, and health and safety. Upon course completion, learners can progress onto an industry-recognised VTCT qualification in Barbering which can provide genuine opportunities for employment upon release from prison. Throughout the VTCT Level 1 or Level 2 qualifications, students will grow their skills and knowledge in modules such as shaving techniques, advising and consulting clients, and the development of effective working relationships.

As soon as COVID restrictions allow, the Barbering Academy will develop to include a combination of self-study and practical sessions that will take place in the purpose-built prison salon. This blended learning approach will give learners the chance to put their knowledge into practice and develop their skills further. The training room of the Academy will be a fully functioning salon, providing valuable services to the whole prison community.
