IET launches Sustainable Community Competition

As part of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (@TheIET) 150^th anniversary, it has partnered with Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) to launch a competition for young people across the UK.

‘My Sustainable Community’ aims to help young people discover how engineering and technology can be key in providing solutions to some of the planet’s largest challenges, all while having fun.

The task is for young people (between the ages of 7-14) to take on the role of an engineer and design a sustainable neighbourhood of 150 homes using their local area as inspiration.

IET President, Danielle George, said:

“Our communities have evolved over thousands of years, but never before has sustainability been so important.

“This competition encourages young people to think about how a whole community could tackle the problems we are facing, like climate change and resources running out. It also lets young people explore the world of STEM as well as improving their skills, such as problem-solving.

“We want young people to imagine an open piece of land with nothing on it, a blank canvas, and design and build a sustainable community. Considering the environment and everything that lives in it is going to be essential and we can’t wait to see what they come up with!”

The project can be done at home or in schools and clubs, and individual and team entries are welcome. The competition closes on Friday 28 January 2022.
