Haringey Sixth Form College Celebrates Stunning Success at Their Vocational Graduation 2019

The afternoon of Wednesday 26th June 2019 saw students, staff, trustees, parents/carers/wards and VIP’s packed in Haringey Sixth Form College’s Sports Hall for their Vocational Graduation 2019.

The event proceeded with an extraordinary piano recital by Ja’vay Cox-Morgan and Rushaun Anthony Cross of Risley Avenue Primary School, accompanied by their Music Teacher, Peter James.

Russ Lawrance, Principal & CEO of Haringey Sixth Form College then welcomed everyone and spoke to the audience with passion – “This graduation is an opportunity to celebrate the incredible achievements of our students, recognising each and every one of you high achievers from across the range of vocational courses at H6.”

While every student’s story is unique, they all share some important traits, those of commitment, endeavour and character. Upholding the college values of excellence in everything you do, showing respect and having a can do will do attitude.

He paid tribute to the students – “I am so proud of all our students, everyone knows that. I have seen them blossoming through their time here, transforming into confident and engaging members of the community” and then went on to thank everyone for the support they have given over the year “But the roots of their success are found in the support provided by their families, friends and the incredible staff at H6. Many of the students would not be sitting here today without the unrivalled support and dedication of their families and our fantastic staff.”

Russ then concluded – “For me, everyone in this room today is a winner and impeccable ambassadors for Haringey Sixth Form College.”

Every student on every vocational course was warmly welcomed to the stage by members of their teaching teams to receive their certificates, recognising their achievements this academic year.

Russ then welcomed Lisa Westray, Deputy Principal & Jacqui Grant, Assistant Principal to the stage to present the H6 Cross College Awards. The six H6C’s reflect the college values. Students were nominated by staff were awarded by an expert panel of judges. The winners were as follows:

• Can do/Will do – Zackariah Ahmed – Studying BTEC Level 2 Media
• Caring – Rosa Askalw – Studying ESOL
• Courageous – Shazia Choudhury – Studying BTEC Level 2 Applied Science
• Connected -Tugba Oguz – Studying Entry Level 3 Life and Living Skills
• Creative -Van Hai Huynh – Studying Level 3 Extended Diploma ICT
• Committed – Chloe Howe – Studying Level 3 BTEC Health & Social Care

Russ then returned to the stage to announce the Principal’s Award for Student of the Year, inviting Dave Wyatt, Chair of the Board of Trustees to present the award to Jeffrey Duah – Studying BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Health & Social Care

While getting his photo taken by the backdrop, one student said “Ahh miss this is sick! Even though I’m coming back in September, I can still say I graduated from the first year of my course!”  

Guest of Honour, Rev. Nims Obunge MBE DL, closed the proceedings with an equally passionate motivating speech.

As well as the achievements of all individual students, the college has achieved national recognition for its work. For example; Haringey Sixth Form College recently won The Sixth Form Colleges Association National Award for Enrichment & Employability through the Haringey Unchained Programme and the H6 Basketball Academy boys are  National Basketball Champions.

Not only this, but work of the Art students have been selected for the Cascade for Origins Creative Arts Festival 2019, which receives over 350 entries from colleges nationwide. Larisse had her work selected by professional curators, Elliott Burns and Pita Arreola, for inclusion in the exhibition!

Additionally, Haringey Sixth Form College is also hosting the SFCA National Art show at Alexandra Palace during the 27th – 30th of June 2019.
