Graphics students’ street art comes to life

Graphic design students at Clarendon Sixth Form College re-create a mural by well-known street artist, ‘Phlegm’.

Based in Sheffield, Phlegm is renowned for his cartoonish and dream-like illustrations and murals, which are painted in black and white on disused buildings. He gained international recognition earlier this year, when his ‘mausoleum of giants’ exhibition was opened in Sheffield city centre.

Using only black and white paper and marker pen, students worked as a team to create a six by three metre copy of a mural in Walthamstow, London. The design is inspired by Alliot Verdon Roe’s famous triplane flights in the borough.

The students’ mural now hangs in the atrium area of Clarendon Sixth Form College, for all to see.

Bethany Roots, graphic design student at Clarendon Sixth Form College, said: “The class enjoyed this task because it took us out of our comfort zone and challenged us to work well together to complete a task. Using only two colours was also interesting. Phlegm’s work is really inspiring and creative and I am pleased that we have managed to use our skills to capture that.”

Harry Arnold, graphic design and media teacher at Clarendon Sixth Form College, said: “The final piece of work that students have created looks excellent. Phlegm is a very inspiring and exciting artist, with new ideas, so re-creating a piece of his work was a great way for students to study him. They also gained key skills such as upscaling, illustrating and project management.”
