Give mental health the same priority as physical health
The Chartered Management Institute CEO Ann Francke has signed a letter to the PM from business leaders urging her to put in promised legislation that companies give equal status to mental health and physical health first aid in the workplace.
Ann Francke said: “We believe that everyone in the workplace that suffers a health problem, whether it be physical or mental, needs the same attention.
“Workplace issues cost the UK economy almost £35bn a year, with 15.4m working days lost to work-related stress, depression or anxiety. It is not just a financial cost but if not addressed affects every aspect of a person’s well-being and ultimately their output.
“In order to break the stigma around of mental health, line managers have a critical role to play in wellbeing and motivation. Managers need to focus on the special needs of employees with mental health issues who can be very productive if they engage with them, agree development goals and provide job satisfaction.”
