emlyon business school launches the first institute for artificial intelligence in management
emlyon business school has launched the Artificial Intelligence in Management (AIM) Institute, a multifaceted initiative focused on understanding the opportunities and implications of artificial intelligence for the management of organizations, industries, and business ecosystems.
Renaud Champion, AIM Executive Director, explains the idea behind the AIM Institute,
“AI is already changing the way we live and work. It’s having a profound effect on every area of business – from work and human resources, to governance and even business models. The AIM Institute will explore what impact AI is having and produce a rich seam of knowledge and applied solutions – on an unprecedented scale – to help business leaders navigate through these turbulent times.”
The AIM Institute has three priorities:
- Research
- Innovation, and
- Dissemination.
Research is the foundation of the institute’s work, carried out by two social science research centers:
The first, AIM Research Center for Work and Organization directed by Professor Ruthanne Huising, examines the implications of AI for work, labor markets, and organizational design and governance.
Professor Ruthanne Huising, AIM Research Director, explains,
“There are many predictions about how AI will change the way we work and organize but relatively few empirical studies. The goal of the AIM Research Center is to support grounded, empirical studies of the way technology is changing, what it means to work and the way work is organized, done, and rewarded. Around any restructuring of work, we want to understand the implications for organizing and governing.”
The second, directed by Professor Margherita Pagani, examines how AI is affecting value creation and fostering the emergence of new business models.
Professor Margherita Pagani, AIM Research Director, outlines,
“The researchers involved in the AIM Research Center on AI in Value Creation want to analyze the impact of AI on a broad range of business and management subjects and offer guidance to organizations on how to use AI for sustainable value creation”
The two centres will initiate and support research that addresses real-world issues facing organizations. The Research Centers are governed by a Scientific Committee made up of leading academics from Stanford, EPFL, UT Austin, VU Amsterdam, Florida State University and University of Southern California.
Innovation is the process of turning research into practical solutions and applications for teaching, learning and business. The institute, working in symbiosis with emlyon business school, will build on its research work to develop training modules and qualifications that will be embedded in the school’s curriculum.
The institute will also systematically explore ways to transfer the fruits of its research to the world of business.
Renaud Champion adds,
“For every research project, we consider whether the work has the potential to contribute to our understanding of how organizations and institutions can take meaningful and responsible advantage of AI. When we encounter projects that have concrete business applications, we might develop patentable models that could be coded and used to develop an application that a partner business might find useful. Or, we may explore the possibility of launching and supporting a start-up to exploit this innovation.”
Dissemination is an important part of the AIM Institute’s work, sharing the outputs of its research work with three target audiences:
- – emlyon business school students, so they are ready to embrace AI in their future roles as business leaders,
- – the general public, to educate them about what AI really entails and to dispel inaccurate and sometimes alarming myths and untruths,
- – local, national and international institutions, to provide technical and ethical guidance that will help to frame public debate.
