Degree awarding powers granted to Richmond, The American International University in London

The only University awarding UK and US degrees: a unique double degree award

Richmond, The American International University in London, is announcing today that it will be able to award UK degrees, having been granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP) by the Privy Council.  This is in addition to the University’s existing US degree-granting authority.  The UK award follows a rigorous review over 18 months led by the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), which maintains standards in UK higher education.

After providing higher education in London for over 40 years, this move is a major development for Richmond. From August 2018, students at the University, which has two campuses in London and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, will be able to look forward to receiving two degree certificates as they will be gaining two degrees in one.

The Richmond dual degree is possible because, in addition to being able to award its own degrees in the UK, the University holds US degree-granting authority from the State of Delaware under accreditation by The Middle States Commission on Higher Education.  Richmond is the first and only University to achieve this combination of US and UK degree-awarding powers.

John Annette, President of Richmond, The American International University in London said, “This is a significant milestone in Richmond’s history.  We’re delighted that we can now award our own UK degrees.  The dual accreditation in the UK and US offers a unique and international education for students which is an ideal preparation for a range of careers.

“Richmond is a liberal arts university, offering students the breadth of study and induction into a range of disciplines that is the hallmark of the liberal arts tradition. We are the only UK University where all undergraduate degrees can be studied within this framework.  Blending the US expectations of a broad curriculum with the British system of specialisation means that our students graduate with a multi-disciplinary knowledge of the world together with in-depth study in a specific area of interest – something we regard as a winning combination.”

With students from over 100 countries, taught in classes with an average size of fewer than 20 students, and 15 contact hours of teaching a week, Richmond provides an unrivalled education in the heart of London.  At £9,250 a year, Richmond’s UK fees are the same as other British universities and come with generous scholarship opportunities.  Visit the website for more details.
