From education to employment

Dave’s passion motivates Sport students

Dave Finnie

Sport students at @BarnsleyCollege Higher Education got the chance listen to guest speaker, Dave Finnie, talk about his extensive career after leaving university.

Dave, based in Sydney, Australia and originally from Wales, spoke about his career in sport and exercise science and gave an insight into career opportunities available within the industry. Dave also discussed his experiences of volunteering, USA summer camps and the gym he manages, Fitbeat. The students took the opportunity to ask Dave questions related to coaching, career progression and opportunities available.

Dave said:

“I think it is really important that students are provided the opportunity to talk to a range of professionals that specialise within different fields of work, even if some of those professionals work within a field that is not specifically aimed at a student’s potential future career.

“If you were to ask someone aged 25-60 ‘is your current job the job you envisioned having at this age when you were 18 years old?’, I can guarantee the majority would say no. Therefore, to gain an honest and in-depth understanding of what a range of professions entail from someone that specifically works within that industry is undoubtedly hugely beneficial and could be the first step towards a successful career.”

Dan Connolly, Sport Higher Education Pathway Leader at Barnsley College, added:

“We were grateful and thrilled when Dave spoke to our degree students about the opportunities available to them within the sport industry. I’d really like to thank Dave for sharing his vision with our students.”

Barnsley College works closely with local, regional and national businesses to collaborate on projects to drive and rejuvenate the economy, and transform the lives of students.
