From education to employment

Civil engineer is ‘Apprentice of the Year’

Civil Engineering apprentice Sanna Shabir of The College of North West London has been recognised as Outstanding BTEC Apprentice (19+) of the Year 2017 at the BTEC Awards.

Sanna was 22 national award winners singled out for excellence in their area of study, after almost 1000 applications were made to this year’s judging panel. Sanna and her fellow winners received their awards at a ceremony in July at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London, following a lunch reception in Parliament with MPs from across the political spectrum.

Sanna, who is employed by major construction company Atkins, was presented with her trophy by BBC television presenter and journalist, Steph McGovern. She commented: “I feel considerably honoured to have won this award. I am gratified that all my efforts I have put in are recognised! I have been supported in my career by my parents, the college and my colleagues and they are all very pleased for me.”

Sanna’s tutor at the College, John Edwards, added: “Sanna is always willing not only to do her best but to promote the industry and apprenticeships to new students. She is a STEM Ambassador and a deserving winner of this award.”
