CITY OF WOLVERHAMPTON COLLEGE’S JOURNALISM COURSE IS BEST IN COUNTRY FOR NINTH YEAR IN A ROW!

A journalism course run by City of Wolverhampton College has been named the best in the country – for the ninth year in a row!  

The college was named as the top further education provider of the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) diploma at the annual NCTJ Awards for Excellence at the Stadium of Light, in Sunderland, on Thursday 28 November.  

The one-year full-time course combines studying at college with work placements at local newspapers to give aspiring journalists the qualification editors look for when appointing reporters.   

The programme covers essential journalism, court reporting, media law, public affairs, ethics, video journalism and shorthand, and students who completed the course in the last academic year have gone on to get jobs with the Express & Star, Shropshire Star and BBC Radio Shropshire,  

Malcolm Cowgill, principal at the college, said: “To win this award for the ninth year in a row is a fantastic achievement and is recognition of the high quality of teaching provided by our tutors to give students the skills and knowledge they need for successful careers in the fast-paced ever-changing media industry.”   

The college has been accredited by the NCTJ since 1997 and is the only accredited further education journalism training centre in the Midlands.  It is also helping to train the BBC’s radio apprentices and is working with the Express and Star on its journalism apprenticeship schem
