Cardiff and Vale College Sport students thanked for their marathon support

Cardiff and Vale College Sport students have been given special plaques by Welsh Athletics’ Run4Wales to thank them for their support during a series of sporting events.

Students from a range of the College’s Sport courses volunteered at hydration stations and in support roles during the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships and at last month’s Cardiff Half Marathon.

CAVC Employability and Progressions Advisor Alyson Llewellyn said: “I asked students from my Sport groups to sign up to become volunteers as it would count towards their work experience hours and enhance their CVs. Seventy turned up for the Cardiff World Half Marathon Championships, which was televised across 53 countries, and we had more volunteers for the Half Marathon. I am very proud of what they have achieved and consequently they are all progressing within their chosen sport with a glowing CV.”

Naomi Warner, Volunteer Manager at Run4Wales, said: “On Sunday 2nd October, 17,000 runners took to the streets of Cardiff to tackle the Cardiff Half Marathon, the second largest half marathon in the UK. A team of students from Cardiff and Vale College joined an 800-strong team of volunteers, The Extra Milers, to get involved and make sure the runners and spectators had the best day possible.

“Volunteers are essential in making sure major sporting events like this happen, we really couldn’t do without them, and it is great to have the continued support of the College. The students were also integral to the success of the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships in March, working extremely hard to keep the 16,000 runners hydrated and supported. We wanted to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to the students for their commitment and hard work.”
