Cambridge Regional College students to represent East Anglia at British Colleges Championships

Two young athletes from Cambridge Regional College are off to the finals of the British Colleges National Championships this month, one of the largest annual sporting events in the country.

Talented Sport students Callum Brookes, a golfer, and Jevan Robertson, a cross-country runner, will be representing the east of England in their sports after qualifying in the regional heats.

They will be among 1,800 sporting stars from colleges across England competing in this month’s finals – with the region winning the most points picking up the prestigious Wilkinson Sword trophy.

Callum, 17, who took up golf four years ago after a broken ankle curtailed a promising tennis career, said he was looking forward to the championships.  

“I was really pleased with my score and winning a place in the final. I’ve been playing golf for four years and I work quite hard at it. I practice most days and work in the pro shop at Saffron Walden golf club. I’m hoping to turn pro in a couple of years,” he said.

Jevan, 18, is also hoping to take his sport to the highest level.

“I run five or six times a week and my ambition is to wear an England vest. I have been running since I was about 14. I used to play football and go running to train but I realised I was better at running than football,” he said.

Rob Metcalfe, head of Sport Studies at CRC, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for two of our students to qualify for the national championships and we are very proud of them both.”
