Bradford College diversity work praised at the British Muslim Awards 2019
Bradford College has been recognised as a Diversity Champion at the British Muslim Awards 2019.
An exhibition about Islamophobia that was organised by the Student Base Team was Highly Commended by judges at the national awards event which took place in Bradford on Tuesday night (February 19).
The college was up against the British Army, The Muslim Council of Britain, Muslim Aid, Cardiff University, The Arts Council of Scotland, Channel 4 and The West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner in the Diversity Champion category, with the latter pipping the college to the top prize.
Mohammed Azeem, Student Base Team Leader, said:
“Finishing second is not bad up against the big giants in our category. Well done to the Bradford College Student Base team and well done to the West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner.”
The college’s nomination related to an exhibition it held during National Islamophobia Awareness Week with support from MEND – Muslim Engagement and Development.
The exhibition showcased the positive contributions of British Muslims such as Mo Farah, Nadiya Hussain and Sadiq Khan whilst also shining a light on the scale Islamophobia and other forms of hate crimes across society.
The British Muslim Awards, now in its seventh year, showcases the strength of the British Muslim community, the impact it has on culture and its achievements over the last year in areas including business, charity, sport, arts, culture, religious advocacy, education and medicine.
The 2019 awards ceremony was held at The Bradford Hotel on Tuesday 19 February, having been postponed from January 30 due to snow.
Irfan Younis, CEO of Oceanic Consulting said:
“I’d like to congratulate all the winners and every finalist from the 7th British Muslim Awards 2019. Every year I think we’ve seen the best the British Muslim community has to offer but every year I’m blown away by just how special the talent is and just how hard people work to service their communities. I already look forward to seeing what next year has to offer; I have no doubt that the Muslim community will continue to thrive and act as leaders for future generations to come.”
