Barton Peveril Subsidise Bus Travel for County’s Students

Barton Peveril have supported its students throughout the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and continue to do so with this subsidy scheme. Due to Government guidelines potentially limiting the number of times students attend lessons on campus, and therefore use their bus passes, the College has subsidised the regular price to reflect this.

This scheme is part of wider efforts to begin a safe return to normality, with social distancing measures put in place to prepare for the return of students in September and wider discussions ongoing to determine the blend of online and on campus learning.

Barton Peveril Principal, Jonathan Prest, commented on the pledge:

“I am delighted Barton Peveril can announce it is subsidising the cost of bus passes for the coming academic year.  Why are we doing this? The College is keen from September to get back to students being taught on campus for most of their sessions. However, as one of the measures to keep our students and staff safe, we will change our timetable to two longer lessons in a day, reducing the number of students in college at any one time. We also need to prepare for having to switch back to online learning, should there be a rise in Covid cases in the UK or in the local population.

“All these factors mean students will not be in college every day of the week, yet the cost of the bus service is fixed. Governors of the college have decided that for this academic year only, the college will subsidise the cost of a bus pass from the normal £650 to £350 pa. We believe this will recognise the less frequent journeys students are making and will help remove one of the many pressures on families at this difficult time.”
