Barton Peveril Student Vows to End Period Poverty

Barton Peveril Sixth Form College student Amber McWilliams (right) is championing Plan International UK’s ‘Let’s Talk. Period’ campaign in College, to raise awareness and bring an end to period poverty in the local community.

The former Oasis Academy: Sholing pupil has organised a series of events to raise money for the campaign and has established a partnership with ASDA, who will be supplying sanitary products to be offered for free in the College’s toilets.

Among the events, McWilliams ran a bake sale during the College’s large Wellbeing, Clubs and Societies Fair. During this event McWilliams received a large number of donations and shared information on period poverty throughout the Barton Peveril student community.

Speaking on the campaign and her intentions, McWilliams said: “I’m organising events to spread awareness about period poverty and what it means, and in the long run hope to continually supply toilets with sanitary products both in College and further afield. In my experience males don’t get taught about period poverty, so I’m trying to educate everyone and raise this as an issue so it can be resolved.”

Barton Peveril’s College Nurse, Shelley Hughes, praised McWilliams and her efforts: “We are thrilled that Amber is championing this important issue. Her enthusiasm and commitment mean that the message about period poverty is being heard loud and clear at Barton Peveril and students will undoubtedly benefit from her endeavours.”
