Barton Peveril Student Targets Oxbridge
Barton Peveril Sixth Form College (@bartonpeveril) student Lamar Mukundi has been selected for the highly selective Target Oxbridge Programme 2021, a competitive programme sponsored by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge that receives thousands of applications each year.
The programme, which awards only 160 places out of a pool of over 1000 applicants from throughout the United Kingdom, is designed to support high achieving UK black students from African or Caribbean heritage to make a competitive application to either the University of Oxford or Cambridge. The programme, devised by Rare Recruitment, is supported by both universities.
Mukundi is the first Barton Peveril student to be selected for this programme. The former St. Mary’s Independent School pupil aims to use the range of opportunities on the programme, including mentoring from current students and alumni from the universities and a summer development programme involving application workshops and subject-specific work from both universities, to apply to the University of Oxford next academic year.
Speaking on his success, Lamar Mukundi said:
“With the support of Target Oxbridge, I hope to complete a successful application to Oxford in October, where I’d like to study Law. I feel honored to have been selected for this programme as over 1000 students applied. I know that with the help of this programme as well as Barton Peveril, I will be prepared for the rigor of this application process.“
Barton Peveril’s Head of Careers and Higher Education, Shoonagh Hubble, commented on Mukundi’s achievement:
“Target Oxbridge is a highly prestigious programme which identifies talented black students and gives them one to one support to help them get into top universities. Places on the programme are extremely competitive so we are delighted that Lamar has been given this potentially life-changing opportunity.”
