Barton Peveril Sixth Form College’s Celebrated Volunteers

@BartonPeveril Sixth Form College students who completed their Duke of Edinburgh’s (@DofE) Awards in the 2019/20 academic year have been commended for their volunteering efforts, by the national youth awards programme. 

The College students were celebrated for donating 754 hours of voluntary service, worth £3279.90, to their local community. In addition, the students completed 702 hours of physical activity and 884 hours working towards a skill as part of their Award and volunteering efforts.

The DofE South East Regional Office has also confirmed that, for the 2019/20 academic year, Barton Peveril students exceeded the charity’s Award completion target. 67% of Barton Peveril students completed their Awards (compared to a national target rate of 60% completion). Three students received Gold Awards, 16 students received Silver Awards, and one student received a Bronze Award.

The DofE Awards task students aged 14 to 24 with helping the community and environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, and planning, training for and completing an expedition. Students can complete these tasks at three progressive levels, from Bronze, to Silver, and finally to Gold.

Barton Peveril Teacher of Geography and DofE Manager, Elaine Hooton, commented on the students’ celebrated volunteering efforts:

“The DofE Award is a challenging undertaking that asks for and develops independence, resilience and confidence. Huge congratulations to all of our students who completed their Awards over the last year and can enjoy their sense of achievement and take these qualities forward into their employment and university applications. As importantly, the Award enables our students to make a really valuable contribution to our local communities through their activities in completing their volunteering, physical and skills sections. We’re so proud of all of them as positive and caring citizens.”
