Barton Peveril’s Careers in Uniformed Services Day

Barton Peveril Sixth Form College (@bartonpeveril) welcomed representatives from the nation’s uniformed services for its inaugural online Careers in Uniformed Services Day, on Wednesday 27th January 2021.

Representatives from the Ambulance Service, Royal Air Force, Police Force, Maritime Cadetship, Royal Navy, Army, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Border Force, and Prison Service were in attendance. Students at the Hampshire-based college attended the lectures virtually, learning more about potential future careers in the uniformed services after they complete their studies.

The ‘Careers in Days’ are a series of annual events that showcase career opportunities in a variety of fields, helping students plan for their future careers. Past events have included the Careers in Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Day, the Careers in the Creative Industries Day, and the Careers in Healthcare Day.

Speaking on the event:

Major Paul Carcone, who shared his insight into careers in the Royal Navy and the British Army, commented on the day and the Barton Peveril students in attendance:

“It has been a great opportunity to show some very talented young people that career options in an Army go far beyond the traditional notion of soldiering.  Demonstrating that even a Chartered Management Accountant with an MBA has just as much place in the modern Army as an Infanteer will hopefully have shown that stretch and challenge offered by a military career can be both intellectual and physical.

“A College like Barton Peveril with its reputation for excellence and a very strong sense of belonging will provide an excellent environment to launch a career as an Officer in the Army and I hope to see some of these great students I’ve spoken with today join up in the future.

“Even where students don’t go on to a career in the Army, it has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase all that we do and I’ve enjoyed the healthy discussions with such an engaging cohort of future leaders.”

Third Year Paramedic Science student Claire Lear, who currently studies at Bournemouth University, also commented on the day:

“Careers in Uniformed Services Day is something I wish I could have experienced whilst at Sixth Form. Paramedic Science and the opportunities that arise from it are not well known so it is important that prospective students learn that it is not all blue lights and sirens. This degree is a gateway of opportunity, leading you to offshore rigs, hazardous area response teams, primary care and much, much more.”
