Barton Peveril’s Award Winning Architect

@BartonPeveril Sixth Form College graduate Eoin Shaw has won the Royal Institute of British Architects (@RIBA) London Student Award 2020. The RIBA London Student Award is a highly sought after accolade that recognises the winner as a prominent architect of the future.

The former Barton Peveril student, who now studies Architecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture: University College London, won the award for a concept he designed for the North London Architects Group (NLAG). 

Shaw designed a Clubhouse for the Association of Enthusiasts of the North London Line, mixing contemporary design with classic architecture to blend a modern building into a centuries old dockyard.

The Royal Institute of British Architects is a global professional membership body driving excellence in architecture in order to deliver better buildings and places, stronger communities and a sustainable environment. The NLAG is one of the RIBA’s largest regional groups, covering a range of boroughs to the north and east of London.

Speaking on Shaw’s winning design, the NLAG judging panel said:

“Great presentation, well-developed concept internally and externally with a sense of atmosphere and good journey through the building. Adopted the surrounding and community in a very natural way.”

Eoin Shaw, who was previously a student at St. George’s Catholic College, commented on his success:

“My final project resulted in the creation of a clubhouse for trainspotters which sits in a pink tube slotted into a series of cranes created as a fictional storage solution for the market along Ridley Road in Dalston that the building sits next to. And despite most of the project being created from home with weekly zoom tutorials, I still managed to create more work than I probably ever have before, including a final drawing the size of a wall on pieced together yellow trace that took 3 weeks to create. 

“The project was nominated and won a prize from the RIBA London for the best first year project from the Bartlett this year, which was both a surprise and an honor and felt like a recognition of both the amount of work I put in and the amount I learnt.”

Barton Peveril Teacher of Fine Art, Kirsty Gormley, praised her former student on the success:

“It’s always fantastic to hear of students’ successes and the art department are delighted that Eoin has won a London Student RIBA Award in his early architectural career. Eoin’s design captures the professionalism and creativity of architecture and his hard work and dedication is a real testament to the College.”
