Barnsley Sixth Form College host Safeguarding Awareness Week launch #SYSAW19

Liz Leek, Vice Principal Curriculum at Barnsley College, welcomes delegates to the launch of Safeguarding Awareness Week

Safeguarding Awareness Week is launched

Barnsley Sixth Form College hosted the Safeguarding Awareness Week launch event on Monday 8 July.

Taking place from Monday 8 July to Friday 12 July 2019, the week is designed to increase awareness of safeguarding in Barnsley and how the public, businesses and partners can address concerns or issues to prevent them escalating with the theme of ‘Your Choices and Rights’.

Councillor Sir Stephen Houghton CBE, Leader of the Barnsley Council, officially opened the event which was attended by The Independent Chair of the Safeguarding Children Partnership and Safeguarding Adult Board, Robert Dyson, and a number of partner organisations including Berneslai Homes, Barnsley College, Barnsley Hospital, Hesley Group and Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group.

Liz Leek, Vice Principal Curriculum at Barnsley College, said: “We were delighted to host this event at the Sixth Form College and welcome everyone to the 2019 launch event.

“Events like this one are vital in order to build links with partner agencies so information is shared which ensures young people and vulnerable adults are safe.”

Councillor Houghton added: “The key purpose of the week is to provide a range of learning and development opportunities for staff and volunteers working in the sectors of safeguarding adults and safeguarding children, so we can be better, together.

“There are vulnerable people in our communities; people of all ages and different backgrounds. Everyone has a right to live a life that is free from abuse and neglect.

“Safeguarding Awareness Week gives us all an opportunity to let people know what we do and how residents, businesses and our partners can address any concerns or issues early on to prevent them escalating, by reporting any concerns they may have about the welfare of children and adults.”
