Barnsley Central MP motivates Public Services students

Barnsley College (@barnsleycollege) Level 3 Public Services students got the chance listen to guest speaker, Dan Jarvis, Member of Parliament for Barnsley Central and Mayor of South Yorkshire, talk about his extensive career in the public service sector.

Dan kicked off the inspirational talk speaking about his military career serving in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, and how the military ethos of courage, discipline, respect for others, integrity and selfless commitment has helped him in his role as MP and Mayor.

Dan also discussed his parliamentary career and his experiences as being the Member of Parliament for Barnsley Central and Mayor of South Yorkshire. Students took the opportunity to ask questions related to their assignments, career choices and progression within the public services industry.

Commenting, Dan Jarvis said:

“I was delighted to speak to this year’s cohort of Barnsley College Public Services students and discuss the work I’m doing both as an MP and as the South Yorkshire Mayor to improve opportunities for young people in our borough and our region.

“It was great to be really put through my paces with a number of excellent and well-informed questions from a clearly engaged and enthusiastic group of students. I hope that – however they choose to serve – they will choose to serve in public life.”

Steven Burkinshaw, Public Services Tutor at Barnsley College, added:

“We were grateful and thrilled when Dan spoke to our students about his career within the public service sector and answered their questions. I’d really like to thank Dan for sharing his vision with our students.”

Barnsley College works closely with local, regional and national businesses to collaborate on projects to drive and rejuvenate the economy and transform the lives of students.
