A crowning glory to be named College of the Year 2019

Students and tutors from The Lee Stafford Academy were proud to come home with 5 trophies from the highly esteemed Hairdresser of the Year 2019, in partnership with Lee Stafford Education, including the accolade of being named College of the Year.

On Tuesday 21st May, 5 students across various course levels, travelled to L’oreal Academy Hammersmith, to represent North Kent College against 9 other colleges from across the UK.

Now in its 3rd year, the prestigious event gives the talented students an opportunity to experience what it could be like to compete in their chosen industry. The competitors were given an hour to complete their entries before being judged on their work by guest judges Martyn Holmes and Tony Wood, alongside Lee Stafford himself.

Kat Jenner, Level 2 Hairdressing student, who was awarded Highly Commended in the Mash Up competition, was dedicated to the competition so highly that she completed her GCSE exam first thing before making her way to London to win her place. Speaking on the day she said, “It was a great experience. After winning my trophy I feel that I have more confidence about my skills, and I have proven that I can achieve things by applying myself. I look forward to entering more competitions”.

Tutors have been on hand to give advice and support in ensuring the entrants felt ready for what the competition would entail, whilst continuing with their usual classes for all other students at the Academy. Their hard work was officially recognised as they were called up on stage to be awarded College of the Year 2019.

Clare Upham- Sharpe, Interim Curriculum Manager Hairdressing, was ecstatic about the number of trophies they achieved, commenting “I’m so proud of the students and staff, and their enthusiasm about taking part today. The amount of time and effort they have put in has been incredible to watch, particularly their drive and determination to do well”.

Speaking to the man behind it all, Lee Stafford spoke with high praise of everyone involved,

“The College had 5 incredible wins today. They have had an exceptional year and always have a positive attitude whilst achieving their big tens and continuing to increase on their student numbers- it was a clear win for North Kent College!”
