The Unmumsy Mum Joins Literacy Charity to Bring Books to Children this Christmas

Author, Sarah Turner aka. ‘The Unmumsy Mum’ and Ambassador of literacy charity UK Reads led a South-West book drop to encourage a love of reading and support children who don’t own a book of their own at home.  

Sarah visited a school and refuge centre in Exeter to distribute books and encourage people to donate to the charity’s Big Give Christmas Campaign.  

Caroline Burkie, COO said: ‘This Christmas we aim to reach 6000 children with books and literacy support. Our Christmas book drops are particularly special as they are often the only gift a child will receive. With the generosity of the public and with Sarah’s support, so many children will be delighted with their books. Our Christmas appeal aims to reach the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children, so if you love reading and understand the importance of escaping into the pages of a terrific book, please donate what you can today.’ 

Sarah Turner said: “As a mum to three boys who love stories, I find it hard to imagine a home without books yet sadly that is the reality for many children in the UK.  UK Reads provides essential literacy resources to children, including books to those who don’t have any of their own at home. I am proud to be involved with this wonderful charity and Christmas appeal. For every £10 received, a child will receive 3 books.’

As a response to the vital need for UK children to have access to books at home, supporting parents to become their child’s first teacher and literacy support, UK Reads was launched in 2020.

During the pandemic, over 200,000 children (in addition to the existing 4.3million children living in poverty) fell below the poverty line, and illiteracy is now the second biggest child concern after food poverty.The next 12 months is crucial to bridging literacy inequality amplified by Covid-19.
