Renowned artist returns to Burton to inspire students

Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) recently welcomed celebrated artist, speaker and advocate, Alison Lapper MBE for an inspiring day of creativity and discussion with students.

As part of her visit to the area, which will include speaking at an International Women’s Day event organised by SARAC, Alison engaged with both creative and health and social care students at BSDC. She delivered a powerful talk about her life, career and the role of art in self-expression, before collaborating with photography learners for a portrait session. In the afternoon, she led an interactive art workshop, sharing her artistic expertise and encouraging students to create artwork without using their hands.

Alison Lapper, originally born in Burton, is an internationally recognised artist and television presenter. Born with no arms and shortened legs, Alison has established herself as an artist and advocate for inclusion in the arts. A member of the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, she holds a First-Class Honours Degree in Fine Art and is known for her resilience, talent and support for disability awareness.

Her life and work gained widespread recognition following Marc Quinn’s iconic sculpture Alison Lapper Pregnant, which was displayed on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth from 2005 to 2007. A large-scale inflatable replica also featured in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Additionally, Alison featured in the 2024 BBC documentary, ‘In My Own Words’ which explored her personal life and career.

Speaking to students during the art workshop, Alison said: “Never say never – there’s always a way. It might take longer or require thinking outside the box, but you can find solutions. The work you’re going into is invaluable; you’re giving something to society that not everyone can do. One day, you’ll look back and see the impact you’ve made, and that’s the most amazing thing. Be proud of the path you’re taking – I think it’s brilliant.”

It was a great opportunity for learners to hear about her experiences, take part in important discussions on inclusion and accessibility, and find new ways to express their creativity.”
