Motorsport Students Prep for Sprint Day at Kirkistown Circuit

South Eastern Regional College’s (SERC) Motorsport Engineering students are in the final stages of prep for Sprint Day at Kirkistown Circuit on Saturday 19 March 9am – 5.00pm.

Motorsport Engineering Lecturer Stuart Parker said, “The first-year students from the Level 3 Motorsport Engineering course, based at SERC’s Newtownards Campus, have been remarkably busy, working on the Formula Ford 1600 in preparation for the race which will see 80 to 100 vehicles from across the Island of Ireland compete.   SERC lecturer Stephen Wishart will be behind the wheel for the race.”

 “If you have never been to a motorsport race, now is the time to come along and support the SERC team. It is extremely exciting, and the team are always out for a win!”

He added, “The Motorsport Engineering first year students take responsibility for the car and driver before, during and after the event. It is a team effort that gives the students the opportunity to see the results of their work on race day.”

Joshua Parsons (17, from Bangor) a first-year student, progressed to SERC from Bangor Grammar School said, “The hands-on experience and the knowledge of the lecturers is amazing.   I have learned so much throughout the course, and it has been brilliant working on the car as part of the team and prepping for race day.”

Stuart continued , “The two-year Level 3 Motorsport Engineering course covers all the essentials for motorsport vehicle maintenance and repairs such as race car setup and inspections, engines, and transmissions, diagnosing and rectifying electrical/electronic equipment faults and regulations. We also cover the engineering element through computer aided design, fabrication and welding, sheet metal fabrication, maths, and of course, engineering health and safety. It is a great course for anyone interested in pursuing a career in engineering, the motor vehicle industry, or further studies at degree level in Motorsport Vehicle Preparation or Engineering.”

Scrutineering starts at 8.00am and the first car will be out on track at 10.00am this Saturday at Kirkistown Motor Racing Circuit. Pay at gate.
