From education to employment

Hitting the re-set button on GCSE English

While studying at St Ivo Academy, Isabelle Parrish found herself lacking motivation in her GCSE English studies where the distraction of having friends in class was more appealing than focussing on her learning.

Isabelle went on to complete her GCSEs with a Grade 3 in English and, with a clear idea of the route she wanted to take in the next stage of her education, enrolled on the Level 3 Creative Media Production Extended Diploma at Cambridge Regional College. Isabelle also started her English studies again.

Isabelle said, “The English Lecturer at CRC explained things much more clearly. I started my English from scratch and found that re-visiting the basics really helped me to get a grasp of the subject.”

Isabelle re-sat her English GCSE in November and got her results in January, when she learned that she had scored the highest mark of all English re-takes across both campuses, securing a Grade 7.

Isabelle added, “I came out of the exam convinced that I hadn’t done very well, so opening my results was a real shock. I can now focus on the Creative Media course. I would like to pursue a career in Graphic Design or Animation and if I can do that through an apprenticeship, I may be more inclined to take that pathway. I haven’t ruled out the idea of going to university though.”
