Barton Peveril Students participating in the Cambridge Chemistry Race

Barton Peveril Sixth Form College Students participated as a team, Ion the Prize, in the Cambridge Chemistry Race held simultaneously at Oxford University and Cambridge University. 

On the 4th February, 5 Barton Peveril Students performed as a team against 20 group contestants. These teams were from colleges and independent schools across the south of the UK.

Cambridge Chemistry Race is a new chemistry competition for teams of 3-5 Sixth-Form students organised by the Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge. The teams raced against each other in solving chemistry problems; the team who gets the most points within the time limit, wins.

The Chemistry Race challenged contestants to only use their trustee calculators and paper literature to read graphs and answer scientific questions. The intention of the competition aims to stretch and challenge students interested in chemistry, and will provide an excellent experience for anyone considering taking their studies further. Students were encouraged to think about science in the way they would at university.

As a result of the event, Ion the Prize came 4th out of the 20 teams.

“It was an amazing experience to apply knowledge from A-level into those challenging questions. I also felt excited to be part of this kind of big event.”

Barton Peveril Subject Leader of Chemistry, Andrew Penson, exclaims:

“Our students had to compete for two solid hours solving many complex chemistry questions that went well beyond the A-level syllabus. All five students should be very proud of their achievement!”
