LSC launches recruitment campaign for Regional Councils

The LSC is launching a recruitment drive to encourage applications for key positions on nine new Regional Councils.

The Councils – established as part of the Further Education and Training Act 2007 – will inform the LSC’s decision making at a regional level, guide progress and make sure the Government’s strategy for education and skills works on the ground.

The Councils – established as part of the Further Education and Training Act 2007 – will inform the LSC’s decision making at a regional level, guide progress and make sure the Government’s strategy for education and skills works on the ground.

Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education, Bill Rammell, said: “Improving the skills of the nation has never been more important. Skills are the key to building a cohesive society and to enabling the UK to compete in an increasingly competitive global economy.

“Over the next 2-3 yrs, the LSC has a huge job to do, overseeing the investment of £11.6bn in 2008-09, £12bn in 2009-10 and £12.6bn in 2010-11 – including large sums of capital investment – for the benefit of young people, adults and employers. The new Regional Councils will have a key role in ensuring that this investment is spent in the right way”.

The nine Regional Councils will replace the existing 47 Local Councils, resulting in a less bureaucratic structure, as well as being aligned to the organisation of the LSC executive team. In this way, the new Councils will reflect both the local and regional needs of learners and employers.

Chris Banks, LSC Chair, said: “Regional Councils will provide challenge, support, and leadership to the LSC’s work; and in doing so will shape a world class education and skills system for each region.

In this way, Regional Council members will have the opportunity to make a real and positive difference to the lives of thousands of individuals and to the success of businesses in the region”.

The LSC is looking for applications from people with a strong commitment to learning and skills. Regional Chairs will have senior level experience in business and Regional Council Members will have senior level experience in fields including business, further and higher education, schools, the voluntary sector, local government and trade unions. Individual learners and organisations that can present the views of learners are also welcome to apply.

As always, the LSC particularly welcomes applicants from people with disabilities, members of ethnic minority groups and women.
