Number of young people not in employment, education or training #NEET has risen this year

This morning (21 Nov) the NEET (Young people not in education, employment or training) figures were released by ONS. They published their latest estimates of young people (aged 16 to 24 years) who are not in education, employment or training, by age and sex: Young people not in education, employment or training (NEET), UK: November 2019.

The report shows that there were 800,000 young people (aged 16 to 24) in the UK who were not in education, employment or training (NEET); this number increased by 8,000 from Apr-Jun and up 43,000 on last year.

Young Enterprise is a national charity that has helped over four million school aged children access key enterprise, employability and financial education across the UK. Every year they  work with 315,000 young people between the ages of 5 to 18, and train 3,200 teachers in both enterprise and financial education, with the help of more than 6,000 volunteers and 3,500 businesses, in order to empower them and enable them to build successful futures.  

“It is disappointing to see that the number of young people not in employment, education or training has risen this year. Many young people find themselves in this position because they don’t have equal access to the right resources and skills.

“Teaching financial, entrepreneurial and life skills is crucial for preparing our young people to succeed in the working world, and we therefore urge the next government, schools and parents to focus on the development of these important skills from an early age to guide young people in the right direction.”
