From education to employment

Sophie embarks on Camp America adventure

20 year old SERC student Sophie Elliot from Lisburn is preparing for her once in a lifetime work placement opportunity at Camp America, Indianapolis.

Having recently completed her travel and tourism course at the Lisburn Campus, Sophie will be attending Camp America as a camp counsellor this summer. For 10 weeks she will work with children and young people between the ages of 5 to 17 years old, organising fun and engaging activities.

The application process was a lengthy and very strict including what proved to be a successful interview. Course Co-Ordinator Catherine Anderson encouraged her whole class to apply for this wonderful opportunity.

Catherine was delighted to hear that Sophie had been successful. She said, “This is an exciting time for Sophie. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in a residential work placement overseas. Sophie will also get the opportunity to see the world and gain valuable work experience in the travel industry. Opportunities like this allow young people to demonstrate their skills and attitude, as well as help them develop their personal and customer service skills and giving them the first step in forging a career in travel.”

Sophie said, “I am both excited and grateful for the opportunity at Camp America. This is a dream come true and my advice to students considering SERC is to consider it is a first option. It’s been the best thing I have ever done.”

In September Sophie is returning to SERC to complete her HND in travel and tourism management.

SERC provides a range of full and part-time courses designed to give students’ the edge’. To find out how SERC can help you ‘get the edge’ call 0345 600 7555, visit www.serc.ac.uk or find us on Facebook, search: South Eastern Regional College.
